Description

The bas-relief of the Gate of Nations at Persepolis embodies the majesty of the Achaemenid Empire through its monumental architecture and rich symbolic ornamentation. Designed during the reign of Xerxes I, this monumental gate served as a solemn entrance for delegations from the four corners of the empire. One of the most remarkable features of this structure is the representation of winged bulls with human heads, known as **lamassu**. These mythological creatures, of Mesopotamian origin, symbolise strength (bull), wisdom (human head) and divine vigilance (wings). They served as spiritual guardians and protectors of sacred places. Sculpted in bas-relief with impressive finesse, they frame the main entrance, giving the site a sacred and imperial aura. Around these majestic figures, cuneiform inscriptions in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian exalt the greatness of the king and affirm the unity of the subjugated peoples. The artistic style combines Persian tradition with Mesopotamian influences, illustrating the openness and cultural power of the empire.
