Cyrus the Great<\/strong> (c. 600\u2013530 BC) was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, the first and largest Persian empire. But Cyrus is most celebrated for his enlightened and tolerant leadership. He respected the customs and religions of the conquered peoples, thus establishing a model of cultural diversity. His famous Cyrus Cylinder, often considered the first charter of human rights, demonstrates his commitment to justice and freedom. He enabled the Jews exiled in Babylon to return to Jerusalem and rebuild their temple. His death in battle marked the end of his reign, but his legacy continues to inspire throughout history.
